Below is the link to LHS's summer reading website. Rather than a prescribed list of books at each level, we have gone to a student-choice approach. Our hope is that this will encourage students to develop and indulge a habit for reading.

All students may select any book of their choice as long it is one that they have not read previously and is appropriate for their reading level. 

In addition, students enrolled in honors and AP classes must read a second book that is assigned.

In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. 

STAND (Students Together Against Negative Decisions) is sponsoring a Zen Den in the Library Computer Lab May 7-9th.  The Zen Den will be set up for relaxation with comfortable furniture, music, a tea station, therapeutic coloring and jigsaw puzzles.  This offers students a space in which to decompress or reset. On May 9th, the Zen Den will feature Murphy the Therapy Dog.  Murphy is a therapy dog at Center School, and Murphy's owner (Technology and Integration Specialist Laura Giuggio) graciously shares Murphy with us. We sharply limit the number of students having access to Murphy, so as not to overstimulate or overtax him, so there are fewer spots available in the Den on that day

You can report directly to the Zen Den for the block you sign up for, and attendance will be taken there. 

LHS student Monica Larioza will be hosting a food drive at the Longmeadow Adult Center on May 5 from 5:30-7:30. Drop off food and enjoy student performances and singing.  Anyone wishing to join in will be given lyrics to well-known songs. Only non-perishable and non-expired items are requested. Suggestions include pasta, pasta sauces, soups, rice, canned fruit, cereal bars, cookies, and healthy snacks. Any money given would be used to buy nonperishables to be donated to the Longmeadow Food Pantry. Please see flyer at left for more details.

At last week's Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association (MICCA) Festival, Longmeadow High School took home 4 Gold Medals for their performances. 

Please join us for the MICCA Gold Medal Showcase Concert on Sunday, April 13th at the Groton Hill Music Center to witness LHS's gold medal winning performances for yourself.

In May 2022, just before high school graduation, Longmeadow and the world lost an amazing young woman in a terrible car crash. Katarina (Kat) Boskovic was an incredibly vivacious, hardworking, funny, smart and kind person and runner who made it a habit to “raise people up.” Be Like Kat, Inc. is a nonprofit, 501c3 organization run entirely by volunteers - all are friends and family who loved Kat. It’s our mission to carry Kat’s spirit forward and impact the world on her behalf. We believe the way we do that is to fuel a movement where we encourage and equip others to take actions to positively impact their communities.

Be Like Kat, Inc. has already given $14,000 in scholarships to LHS students who exemplify the hard work, determination, and kindness of Katarina and has already donated over $16,000 to other local charities whose work is to raise up others and spread love.  During the month of March, Be Like Kat is partnering with the Longmeadow Jersey Mike’s to raise funds for scholarships. A percentage of all sales will be donated to the Be Like Kat organization and on March 26,100% of all sales will be donated to Be Like Kat.  For more information find us at www.belikekat.com.  The Be Like Kat Foundation is rewarding whichever LHS class supports the effort the most with a class donation at the end of the fundraiser.

Longmeadow High School will be conducting its school climate survey beginning March 17th, in compliance with anti-bullying legislation in Massachusetts.  Students will be surveyed during Health and Wellness classes.  We have included questions on a range of health issues to better inform our prevention programming and health curriculum.  Student completion of the survey is voluntary and completely anonymous.  If you wish for your child to NOT participate in this survey, please follow the  linked directions.

With inclement weather forecast for the duration of tomorrow's school day, Longmeadow Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, February 6.

Mid Year Assessment Schedule

All year long courses will have Mid-Year Assessments.  All semester long courses will have a Final Exam.  For full year courses, Mid-Year Assessments come in two forms - either an exam or an experience.  Mid- Year Exams will be entered into the E1 column of report cards and have a value of 10% of the annual grade.  Experiences will be entered as a major grade into Qtr 2.  Examples of Experiences are presentations, culminating projects, extended labs, synthesis of learning activities, etc.  

In terms of the logistics - January 15th, 16th and 17th will be days when students have their assessments and are only required to be on campus for the exam or experience of their particular classes.  Students are free to come and go if they do not have an exam.  However, students are able to remain on campus for the entirety of the days and study in either the Library/Media Center (quiet studying) or the Cafeteria (for collaborative study and  discussion).  Faculty and Staff will be present all day at school.  Students are responsible to be present for all of their scheduled exams and can only make them up on Friday at 12:45 pm if a parent/guardian communicated to the school that their absent child was out legitimately, so please make sure to report your child as absent if they miss any scheduled assessment.  The make-up period for students who were reported absent by families will be Friday the 17th from 12:45 - 2:15. Any student who has no assessments to make-up will not be required to be here on Friday the 17th after 11:30 a.m. 

Lunch will be served each day between 11:30 - 12:45 in the cafeteria all three days.

STAND Club is collecting donations of personal care items and toiletries for My Sister's House.  My Sister's House is a women's recovery home in Springfield, which prioritizes pregnant and postpartum women parenting babies.   They appreciate socks, underwear, hats, gloves, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and baby care items such as diapers, wipes, onesies.  There is a donation box outside of the main office.  The deadline is December 20th.  

LHS Drama presents Legally Blonde JR. The show follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. When Elle's boyfriend, Warner, dumps her and heads to Harvard, claiming she's not "serious" enough, Elle takes matters into her own hands, crafting a showy song-and-dance personal essay and charming her way into law school. Befriending classmate, Emmett, and spunky hairdresser, Paulette, along the way, Elle finds that books and looks aren't mutually exclusive.  As Elle begins outsmarting her peers, she realizes that law may be her natural calling after all.

We are less than a month away from starting our Fall sports season! Please take a few minutes to complete the athletic registration process if your son or daughter is interested in playing a Fall sport. Go to our Athletic Website (Longmeadow Athletic Website) and register for Fall Sports by Friday August 9th. We have a lot of resources that can walk you through the registration process located on the top of our website in the drop-down menus.

All parts of the Athletic Registration must be completed prior to be cleared to participate. This includes Family ID registration, an up to date physical and all user fees paid in full.

Longmeadow High School is offering Sophomores the opportunity to take the PSAT 10 on Wednesday April 24, 2024.  The digital PSAT 10 is a practice test for the new digital PSAT and SAT.

For 8th grade students who are considering attending Longmeadow High School in Fall 2024, please be aware that we are hosting an Academic Preview Hour on Tuesday, February 27th from 9-10:30AM.  Students will hear from the school counselors about course offerings and extracurricular activities and from a panel of department chairs and students.  

For students outside of Longmeadow Public Schools:  Parents/guardians should email Beth Jablonski, School Counseling Administrative Assistant,  to let us know if their child plans on attending.  Students planning on attending should check in at the main office before proceeding to our auditorium for the program on February 27th.

Key Club's WINTER FESTIVAL will be Sunday, January 28th from 2:30 to 4:30 in the LHS cafeteria and gymnasium! Children under 10 are encouraged to drop by with their parents for a student-run, fun-filled afternoon with games, crafts, and treats! This event is free to attend, but if you'd like to donate, clothing and monetary donations will benefit Lydia's Closet.

Screenagers Under the Influence:  Addressing Vaping, Drugs, and Alcohol in the Digital Age delves into how the tech revolution has reshaped adolescence and its effects on substance use.  The film debunks myths and depicts strategies parents and schools can use to encourage healthy decision-making, support teen mental health, set limits, and create healthy home environments.  Most documentaries on substance use focus on severe addiction. This film explores more common scenarios and interweaves cutting-edge science with personal stories, making it informative and entertaining for both young people and adults.

PSAT's are being administered to the Class of 2025 at Longmeadow High School on Wednesday, October 25th. Registration is open and continues through Friday, October 6th. We will not accept any late registrations.   The fee is $18 and checks can be made payable to Longmeadow High School.  Students can bring their payment and registration forms to the School Counseling Office before and after school or during lunch. I have also attached a copy of the registration form, which provides information about exam day. It can also be found on the LHS website>Counseling dropdown>standardized tests.  If you have any questions regarding the PSAT's, please feel free to contact your son/daughter's school counselor.

The Financial Aid Night is being held Thursday, September 28th at 6:30 P.M. in the Business and Technology Center (BTC).   A representative from the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority will be presenting on applying for financial aid, completing the FAFSA, and information about scholarships, grants, and loans.  Students are encouraged to attend.  Please park in the main lot on Grassy Gutter and enter through the set of doors to the left of the main entrance (Pool entrance ,A1). Signs will be posted directing you to the BTC.

Hi, LHS!!

We are excited to announce that The Lancer Way will take place on Thursday, September 14th at 5PM in the community foyer.

This is open to all grades and will highlight the extracurricular activities that LHS has to offer. This is a time to sign up for the extracurriculars and to ask the members questions.  It is not too late to get involved at LHS!

Visit the student-led tables and complete a scavenger hunt, and you will receive a free admission ticket to the first home football game that starts at 6 PM that night at the LHS stadium.

If you are involved in an extracurricular activity and want to make sure your group is represented, check in with your advisor or see me in the front office.

Good afternoon LHS.  Please see the link below to read the August Newsletter.  It is filled with information about the opening of the school year, various efforts and events regarding this year, MCAS dates, a school calendar, information about joining the LHS Parent Advisory Council (PAC), etc.  It may be helpful to print it out so you can refer back to it later in the year.  Although it's noted in the newsletter, I want students and families to know to expect a message this Friday, August 11th, from our School Counseling Chairperson, Donna Lyons, about student schedules and Power School access to viewing them.  Counselors will be here at school on August 21st, 22nd and 23rd for student conflicts (meaning that a student signed up for a particular course but didn't get it in their schedule).  Lastly, please visit our LHS Athletics page for Fall 2023 practice/tryout information. Football begins on Friday, August 18th and all other sports begin Monday, August 21st.

I look forward to welcoming 9th graders and other brand new LHS students at our Orientation on August 28th and all other students on August 29th, the first day of school.

LHS AUGUST NEWSLETTER 2023

The Niko Sierra Athletic Scholarship Fund, Inc. was established to assist families in need. It is our vision to encourage student-athletes to compete without having to worry about the  financial burden it may cause in some families, due to temporary setbacks. The organization provides scholarships to those students whose families may be struggling financially but want to provide their children with the best athletic and academic experiences possible. We recognize that some families may currently be in a situation where finances are extremely tight and children need a healthy outlet to become well-rounded, resilient human beings.

Any scholarships awarded for partial or full athletic fees are paid directly to Longmeadow High School

Longmeadow has received our final summary report regarding the NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges) Accreditation process.  As part of their requirements, schools must share copies of the report with various entities - the Superintendent, the School Committee, the MA Department of ESE, the local press and Storrs Library.  Additionally, we want to share it here on our website so it is easily accessible to stakeholders.  

As an FYI, Longmeadow HS began this process during the 2018-2019 school year.  In addition to the staff, students and community providing feedback and input, there were two formal NEASC visits to LHS - the first being in November of 2020 (virtual visits of online classes, virtual interviews with staff and students) and the final visit being in person in December of 2022.  There were several aspects of the process but the highlight was the development of our Vision of the Graduate, which identifies six competencies (independence, accountability, problem solving, communication, collaboration, critical thinking) and challenges us to embed these into teaching and learning activities, assessments and the overall student experience.  

Additionally, there were several commendations and recommendations included in the report.  

Commendations: 

The safe and supportive school environment that supports students in meeting the schools' expectations.

The positive relationship between the students and faculty that help to foster the school's safe and secure environment.

The administration's efforts to develop a supportive and inclusive school environment.

The school's many extracurricular activities that support and honor diverse perspectives and identities within the school community.

The extensive integration of the Vision of the Graduate into both the school's physical and digital environments.

The School Committee's support of the expansion of the Vision of the Graduate into the district at large.

The commitment of the district and school to fully execute the school's improvement plan.

The school's allocation of resources and staffing to develop extensive Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions.

The MTSS/Child Study Team's continued advocacy to develop tiered interventions for students.

Recommendations:

Ensure that the school's core values, beliefs about learning and Vision of the Graduate are known and understood by all members of the school community.

Develop and implement a plan to ensure a wide range of assessment strategies, especially formative assessments, to inform and differentiate instruction.

Develop and implement a plan to track and measure student achievement to justify entry and exit into Tier II and Tier II interventions and establish measures of program efficacy.

Ensure that the display cases in the school do not pose a safety risk (already completed).

Administer a graduate survey, share the data with stakeholders and use the data to inform decisions about next steps.  Revise the survey as needed.

Strengthen classroom teaching by sharing best practices/modeling of Tier I and Tier II interventions happening in classrooms now.

Develop additional opportunities for student internships/hands-on learning experiences that involve connections with the community.

Rebuild and re-engage the student body in the arts and music programs that were impacted by the pandemic.

Develop and implement rubrics with subject and discipline-specific language.

Develop more teacher-led professional development opportunities to align the curriculum with the Vision of the Graduate.

LHS Peer Leaders will be selling bracelets and accepting donations to benefit Ukrainian refugees. All proceeds will be donated to the International Red Cross Red Crescent. International Red Cross Red Crescent is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that has provided relief in the form of shelter, water/sanitation, financial assistance, and health services to millions of Ukrainian refugees in seven European countries. Below is the link to LHS's summer reading website. Please note that we have made a significant change from previous years. Rather than a prescribed list of books at each level, we have gone to a student-choice approach. Our hope is that this will encourage students to develop and indulge a habit for reading.

All students may select any book of their choice as long it is one that they have not read previously and is appropriate for their reading level. 

In addition, students enrolled in honors and AP classes must read a second book that is assigned.

Please consider cleaning out your closets and donating gently used clothing, housewares, textiles and media to our Class of 2024 FunDrive.  Items can be brought in anytime, but we will be having a special drop off day this Saturday, May 6th from 11:30am-1:30pm in front of LHS.  Drive up and drop off.  What could be easier?

The School Counselors have completed the process of meeting with students during their Wellness/Health classes to review their course requests for next year.  Parents and students can check the course requests by logging into the PowerSchool portal and selecting the “Class Registration” icon.  Any students who have not met with their counselor to review their course requests for the 2023-24 academic-year should see their School Counselor as soon as possible and no later than Monday, April 10th.  All course waivers and course changes are also due on April 10th.  No exceptions.

We will not be accepting any late waivers or course changes as it becomes very difficult to determine class section numbers.  If students are considering a waiver in any subject area, they should submit the waiver by April 10th.  

Counselors will be available before school begins on Monday, August 21, Tuesday, August 22, and Wednesday August 23 for any students who have conflicts in their schedule.  An email will be sent prior to these dates with instructions on how to sign up for a time slot.

The snow rolled in earlier than anticipated today.  Longmeadow Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, March 14 due to inclement weather.  

Longmeadow High School will be conducting its school climate survey this spring, in compliance with the anti-bullying legislation in Massachusetts.  Students will be surveyed during Health and Wellness classes.  We have included questions on a range of health issues to better inform our prevention programming and health curriculum.  Student completion of the survey is voluntary and completely anonymous.  If you wish for your child to NOT participate in this survey, please follow the directions for Passive Consent by contacting Shelly Warren by email at swarren@longmeadow.k12.ma.us.

Due to the impending snow storm, Longmeadow Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, February 28.

This year marks 10 years since our move into the new LHS! 

Ten years ago in mid-February, teachers moved OUT of the old building on the day before February vacation and moved INTO the new building on the day after February vacation. What a momentous time it was to see the fruits of multiple years of hard work by so many.  Below is a link to photos and videos of the old building,  its demolition and the construction of the new building. The images are great records and will certainly be nostalgic for many. We look back with gratitude and appreciation for being given a  beautiful new space to work and learn together.

Longmeadow Drama Club is holding auditions for the play The Outsiders. The Outsiders is a stage play (not a musical) written by Christopher Sergel based on the novel of the same name by S. E. Hinton. It is a full-length play split into two acts. Those who would like to audition please prepare a short monologue (about 1 min) - can be of your own creation or taken from a current play, book, poetry, movie, etc., and does not have to be memorized (though should be rehearsed). Auditions will take place the week after February break and are open to all students at the high school. (Please see the attached ad for dates and times). Hope to see you there!

The Outsiders-Play Synopsis

Any member of our community with information may contact LPD or LPS or leave a message on the Longmeadow Police Department’s anonymous tip line at 413-565-4199.  Staff, students or any community member may also submit an anonymous report through the District’s on-line See Something Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (SSARS).  SSARS is entirely anonymous and user-friendly.  

The Storrs Library will be hosting LHS Late Nights during Mid-Terms this week. The library will be opened until 10PM Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday exclusively for LHS students. 

LHS student ID is required to participate.

In addition, National Honors Society (NHS) will have tutors available from 8-10 pm. If you would like help, there is no need to sign up; simply go to Storrs and find a tutor at the reserved tables.

The College Admission Night for Juniors and their parents/guardians is being held on Tuesday, January 17th at 6:30 P.M. in the Longmeadow HS Business and Technology Center (BTC). Ryan Forsythe, Vice President of Enrollment Management, from  Worcester State University will present on what juniors should be doing now as it relates to the college search process.  

Parking is available in the lot on Grassy Gutter Road. Please enter through the A1 (athletic) entrance and the BTC is left and down the hallway.

The New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) conducted an on-site Decennial Accreditation visit of Longmeadow High School from December 4, 2022, through December 7, 2022.  The visit was conducted under the direction of the Commission on Public Schools of NEASC.

 The purpose of this visit was to review and determine from an outside professional viewpoint the extent to which the school is aligned with the Standards for Accreditation. As part of the assessment, the visiting team met with all school constituents, reviewed the school’s Self-Reflection, visited a number of classes, and examined examples of student work submitted by the school. The goal of the Decennial visit was to stimulate a continuing drive for improvement in the school. The members of the visiting team were teachers and administrators from a variety of schools in the Massachusetts area.

 The New England Association of Schools and Colleges is a voluntary membership organization of more than 2,000 public schools, colleges and universities, independent schools, and vocational, technical, and career institutions. Of these, over 725 schools have been accredited through the Association's Commission on Public Schools. The Commission works with individual public schools to improve the quality of education through a continuous process of Accreditation and evaluation.

Wednesday: Ugly Sweater: That's right. Wear your ugliest sweater.

Thursday: Anything But a Backpack: Bring your school gear in something besides your backpack.  Just a reminder that you have to bring this with you for the day and cannot impede on the educational process.

Friday: White Out: Wear white; after all it will be winter.  

Friday afternoon activities: Remember to show your support for those students participating in the basketball game, talent show, or maker's space.

The LHS Drama Club performance of RENT school edition will be on Friday, December 9th at 7 pm and Saturday, December 10th at 5 pm. Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent School Edition is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, it has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
