Screenagers Under the Influence - Save the Date

Fall 2023 PSAT Registration
PSAT's are being administered to the Class of 2025 at Longmeadow High School on Wednesday, October 25th. Registration is open and continues through Friday, October 6th. We will not accept any late registrations. The fee is $18 and checks can be made payable to Longmeadow High School. Students can bring their payment and registration forms to the School Counseling Office before and after school or during lunch. I have also attached a copy of the registration form, which provides information about exam day. It can also be found on the LHS website>Counseling dropdown>standardized tests. If you have any questions regarding the PSAT's, please feel free to contact your son/daughter's school counselor.
Financial Aid Night
The Financial Aid Night is being held Thursday, September 28th at 6:30 P.M. in the Business and Technology Center (BTC). A representative from the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority will be presenting on applying for financial aid, completing the FAFSA, and information about scholarships, grants, and loans. Students are encouraged to attend. Please park in the main lot on Grassy Gutter and enter through the set of doors to the left of the main entrance (Pool entrance ,A1). Signs will be posted directing you to the BTC.

Niko Sierra Scholarship Fund Questionnaire
The Niko Sierra Athletic Scholarship Fund, Inc. was established to assist families in need. It is our vision to encourage student-athletes to compete without having to worry about the financial burden it may cause in some families, due to temporary setbacks. The organization provides scholarships to those students whose families may be struggling financially but want to provide their children with the best athletic and academic experiences possible. We recognize that some families may currently be in a situation where finances are extremely tight and children need a healthy outlet to become well-rounded, resilient human beings.
Any scholarships awarded for partial or full athletic fees are paid directly to Longmeadow High School
NEASC Final Summary Report
Longmeadow has received our final summary report regarding the NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges) Accreditation process. As part of their requirements, schools must share copies of the report with various entities - the Superintendent, the School Committee, the MA Department of ESE, the local press and Storrs Library. Additionally, we want to share it here on our website so it is easily accessible to stakeholders.
As an FYI, Longmeadow HS began this process during the 2018-2019 school year. In addition to the staff, students and community providing feedback and input, there were two formal NEASC visits to LHS - the first being in November of 2020 (virtual visits of online classes, virtual interviews with staff and students) and the final visit being in person in December of 2022. There were several aspects of the process but the highlight was the development of our Vision of the Graduate, which identifies six competencies (independence, accountability, problem solving, communication, collaboration, critical thinking) and challenges us to embed these into teaching and learning activities, assessments and the overall student experience.
Additionally, there were several commendations and recommendations included in the report.
The safe and supportive school environment that supports students in meeting the schools' expectations.
The positive relationship between the students and faculty that help to foster the school's safe and secure environment.
The administration's efforts to develop a supportive and inclusive school environment.
The school's many extracurricular activities that support and honor diverse perspectives and identities within the school community.
The extensive integration of the Vision of the Graduate into both the school's physical and digital environments.
The School Committee's support of the expansion of the Vision of the Graduate into the district at large.
The commitment of the district and school to fully execute the school's improvement plan.
The school's allocation of resources and staffing to develop extensive Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions.
The MTSS/Child Study Team's continued advocacy to develop tiered interventions for students.
Ensure that the school's core values, beliefs about learning and Vision of the Graduate are known and understood by all members of the school community.
Develop and implement a plan to ensure a wide range of assessment strategies, especially formative assessments, to inform and differentiate instruction.
Develop and implement a plan to track and measure student achievement to justify entry and exit into Tier II and Tier II interventions and establish measures of program efficacy.
Ensure that the display cases in the school do not pose a safety risk (already completed).
Administer a graduate survey, share the data with stakeholders and use the data to inform decisions about next steps. Revise the survey as needed.
Strengthen classroom teaching by sharing best practices/modeling of Tier I and Tier II interventions happening in classrooms now.
Develop additional opportunities for student internships/hands-on learning experiences that involve connections with the community.
Rebuild and re-engage the student body in the arts and music programs that were impacted by the pandemic.
Develop and implement rubrics with subject and discipline-specific language.
Develop more teacher-led professional development opportunities to align the curriculum with the Vision of the Graduate.

8th Grade Action Civics Survey
As a part of our group's 8th-grade civics action project on later high school and middle school start times, we created a survey. It would greatly help us if Longmeadow students in 6th through 12th grade could fill it out. If you could get at least a few of your students to fill out the survey, it would be greatly appreciated.

NEW Longmeadow High School Summer Reading Website
Below is the link to LHS's summer reading website. Please note that we have made a significant change from previous years. Rather than a prescribed list of books at each level, we have gone to a student-choice approach. Our hope is that this will encourage students to develop and indulge a habit for reading.
All students may select any book of their choice as long it is one that they have not read previously and is appropriate for their reading level.
In addition, students enrolled in honors and AP classes must read a second book that is assigned.
Class of 2024 FunDrive donation Drop Off Day!
Please consider cleaning out your closets and donating gently used clothing, housewares, textiles and media to our Class of 2024 FunDrive. Items can be brought in anytime, but we will be having a special drop off day this Saturday, May 6th from 11:30am-1:30pm in front of LHS. Drive up and drop off. What could be easier?

Snow Day #2
The snow rolled in earlier than anticipated today. Longmeadow Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, March 14 due to inclement weather.
Mean Girls - Senior Class Play
The Senior Play, Mean Girls, will run three performances next week - Thursday, March 16th at 7:00 pm, Friday, March 17th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, March 18th at 1:00 pm. Please come out to support the Class of 2023. The Senior Play is always a great event and it is the biggest fundraiser that the class holds.
Spirit Week - March 13-17
We have an exciting week coming up next week that starts Monday, March 13. During the week, there will be March Madness after school on most days, a community music performance on Tuesday night, and the senior class play on Thursday night, Friday night, and Saturday afternoon. To add to the excitement, your student leaders have added a fun spirit week, and we are encouraging everyone to participate.
School Climate Survey
Longmeadow High School will be conducting its school climate survey this spring, in compliance with the anti-bullying legislation in Massachusetts. Students will be surveyed during Health and Wellness classes. We have included questions on a range of health issues to better inform our prevention programming and health curriculum. Student completion of the survey is voluntary and completely anonymous. If you wish for your child to NOT participate in this survey, please follow the directions for Passive Consent by contacting Shelly Warren by email at email@example.com.
Snow Day #1
Due to the impending snow storm, Longmeadow Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, February 28.
Celebrating the 10 year anniversary of our new school building!
This year marks 10 years since our move into the new LHS!
Ten years ago in mid-February, teachers moved OUT of the old building on the day before February vacation and moved INTO the new building on the day after February vacation. What a momentous time it was to see the fruits of multiple years of hard work by so many. Below is a link to photos and videos of the old building, its demolition and the construction of the new building. The images are great records and will certainly be nostalgic for many. We look back with gratitude and appreciation for being given a beautiful new space to work and learn together.
Longmeadow Drama Club is holding auditions for the play The Outsiders. The Outsiders is a stage play (not a musical) written by Christopher Sergel based on the novel of the same name by S. E. Hinton. It is a full-length play split into two acts. Those who would like to audition please prepare a short monologue (about 1 min) - can be of your own creation or taken from a current play, book, poetry, movie, etc., and does not have to be memorized (though should be rehearsed). Auditions will take place the week after February break and are open to all students at the high school. (Please see the attached ad for dates and times). Hope to see you there!

Any member of our community with information may contact LPD or LPS or leave a message on the Longmeadow Police Department’s anonymous tip line at 413-565-4199. Staff, students or any community member may also submit an anonymous report through the District’s on-line See Something Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (SSARS). SSARS is entirely anonymous and user-friendly.
Early Dismissal January 25th
UPDATE: Due to inclement weather, Longmeadow Schools will follow a half-day, early release schedule tomorrow, January 25. Tomorrow is a Day 3, so we will hold the first three blocks of Day 3 as originally planned - Blocks C3, A3 and D3. We will dismiss at 10:45 am. Students wanting to get a lunch can get a grab-n-go box lunch and we will call students down just before the end of D block. All after school activities, including all athletics, clubs, etc., are canceled for tomorrow.
LHS Late Nights
The Storrs Library will be hosting LHS Late Nights during Mid-Terms this week. The library will be opened until 10PM Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday exclusively for LHS students.
LHS student ID is required to participate.
In addition, National Honors Society (NHS) will have tutors available from 8-10 pm. If you would like help, there is no need to sign up; simply go to Storrs and find a tutor at the reserved tables.
College Admission Night
The College Admission Night for Juniors and their parents/guardians is being held on Tuesday, January 17th at 6:30 P.M. in the Longmeadow HS Business and Technology Center (BTC). Ryan Forsythe, Vice President of Enrollment Management, from Worcester State University will present on what juniors should be doing now as it relates to the college search process.
Parking is available in the lot on Grassy Gutter Road. Please enter through the A1 (athletic) entrance and the BTC is left and down the hallway.
NEASC Summary Report
The New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) conducted an on-site Decennial Accreditation visit of Longmeadow High School from December 4, 2022, through December 7, 2022. The visit was conducted under the direction of the Commission on Public Schools of NEASC.
The purpose of this visit was to review and determine from an outside professional viewpoint the extent to which the school is aligned with the Standards for Accreditation. As part of the assessment, the visiting team met with all school constituents, reviewed the school’s Self-Reflection, visited a number of classes, and examined examples of student work submitted by the school. The goal of the Decennial visit was to stimulate a continuing drive for improvement in the school. The members of the visiting team were teachers and administrators from a variety of schools in the Massachusetts area.
The New England Association of Schools and Colleges is a voluntary membership organization of more than 2,000 public schools, colleges and universities, independent schools, and vocational, technical, and career institutions. Of these, over 725 schools have been accredited through the Association's Commission on Public Schools. The Commission works with individual public schools to improve the quality of education through a continuous process of Accreditation and evaluation.

Drama Club Presents--RENT
The LHS Drama Club performance of RENT school edition will be on Friday, December 9th at 7 pm and Saturday, December 10th at 5 pm. Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent School Edition is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, it has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Stroll for Strength UPDATE
Please note the time adjustment regarding our annual Stroll For Strength. The road race/walk portion was advertised as beginning at 1:00 p.m. but the start time is actually 12:30 p.m. This is a great event, held on the half day before Thanksgiving each year (Wednesday, November 23rd) and is planned and executed by our Sport & Event Management students. Please consider joining us for a run, a walk or just the company of others.
NHS is a student-run organization that offers free tutoring to any and all students in the Longmeadow Public School system. Students who sign up will be paired with an NHS member (juniors and seniors at LHS), based on availability and subject proficiency, with whom they will communicate a date and time for an extra help session at Storrs Library, the high school, or over Zoom. Interested students can fill out the Google Form below to get paired with a tutor.
Financial Aid Night

The School Counseling Office has begun collecting fees for AP Exams. The fee is $97.00 for each exam. Checks should be made payable to Longmeadow High School, and all regular registration fees are due in the School Counseling Office on Tuesday, November 8th. Late payments will be accepted from Wednesday, November 9th through Wednesday, March 8, 2023 for a fee of $137.00 per exam. Exam fees will not be accepted after noon on March 8th. If you have any extenuating circumstances regarding payment or testing conditions, please see Ms. Lyons.
LHS AUGUST NEWSLETTER
Good afternoon LHS students and families. Happy August to everyone. I have attached the LHS August Newsletter to this message. It is filled with information, guidance, reminders and dates of upcoming events. The newsletter, along with the email sent last week to 9th graders/other new students regarding orientation on August 26th, will be posted on our website for easy access.
The newsletter has information about both athletics and scheduling conflicts/access to school counselors. However, as a reminder Football begins on Friday, August 19th and all other sports begin on Monday, August 22nd. More detailed information in included in the newsletter and on our website. School counselors will be available to address schedule conflicts beginning on Friday, August 19th and a separate message with online signup information will be sent out to students and families by mid August regarding this topic.
In addition to the information in the newsletter, I wanted to let parents/guardians know that we have four open parent/guardian slots on the LHS School Council this year. The School Council meets six - seven times throughout the year and discuss topics affecting LHS, including budgetary issues, School Improvement Plans, Student Handbook issues, etc. In addition to parent/guardians, there are also student representatives, teacher representatives and a non parent/guardian community representative. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month, beginning in October, from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. If you are interested in serving on the LHS School Council, please email me directly to express your commitment by August 29th. If there are more than four people interested, we will hold an election. Thank you for considering.

9th GRADE/NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
Good morning to our incoming 9th graders and their families, as well as any other brand new students to LHS. I will be sending all students and families the August Newsletter early next week but I wanted to check in with you now to provide some helpful information about the beginning of the school year and the 9th Grade/New Student Orientation we have planned for Friday, August 26th.
School begins for all students on Monday, August 29th. Students should be in their first block classes for the 7:44 announcements. Additionally, we are holding an Orientation for 9th Graders and any other new students on Friday, August 26th. The event begins at 8:15 am in the LHS Auditorium. Students will get to meet LHS administrators, school counselors, social workers, their class advisors, our School Resource Officer and our Athletic Director. Students will also hear about various co-curricular opportunities (athletics and clubs) and there will be interest sheets regarding clubs for any student to sign up to learn more about a club while not having to commit to membership then and there.
While we will have many opportunities to meet with and engage with students regularly throughout the year, this orientation is a good way to have students get to know the administration and support staff, learn more about various opportunities and get more comfortable in recognizing us and approaching staff early in the year. After a brief introduction in the auditorium, students will get a tour of the school, along with an opportunity to follow their own schedules and see where their classes are located. LHS student volunteers assist with this effort and faculty and student volunteers work to make this a fun half day for new students. The day ends with an ice cream social. The orientation ends at 12:15 and students can enjoy the rest of their day and weekend before joining all students at school the following Monday.
